The team
-

Maria Vittoria Mancini, PhD
Group Leader
I am fascinated by insects and the interactions with their microbial symbionts. I completed my PhD at the University of Camerino, Italy, and then moved to the Centre for Virus Research in Glasgow, where I worked on Wolbachia-based approaches for dengue control. After a few years in Scotland, I am now back in Italy as the leader of the Insect Symbionts research group
-

Daniel Gingell
Postdoc Researcher
I am interested in vector biology and the interactions between mosquitoes and the viruses they transmit. I completed my PhD at the University of Glasgow-Centre for Virus Research and I am now a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Pavia. My current work focuses on the newly invasive Aedes koreicus and its host–virus interactions to better understand its potential role in arbovirus transmission.
-

Romina Bahrami
PhD student
I am an international PhD student in Cellular, Molecular Biology and Genetics at the University of Pavia, supported by the “Viral Threat” fellowship. I have always been fascinated by how tiny microbes can shape the biology of their hosts and interact with other members of the microbiota. My research focuses on the mosquito Aedes koreicus—from studying its thermal biology to determine the optimal temperature for its development, to exploring its interactions with symbiotic bacteria that may influence its physiology and adaptation
-
Sofia di Castri
Insectary Manager - in collaboration with the “Bonizzoni Group”
I'm fascinated by the complex parasite-host interactions, as well as symbiosis and symbiotic control methods. I obtained my Master's degree in molecular biology from the University of Camerino and conducted my Master’s thesis internship at the University of Pavia, where I am now continuing my research on virus–host–microbiota interaction in Aedes mosquitoes.
-

Ottavia Zaffaroni
PhD student
I have always been passionate about zoology, animal interactions and evolution. I recently graduated in Biodiversity and Evolution, after completing a thesis focused on the development of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Together with my Bachelor’s thesis on avian hemosporidians, this allowed me to begin exploring the fascinating world of microbiology and interspecies interactions.
-

Ege Gezer
Master student
I enjoy exploring the links between molecular biology and insect ecology, especially how microbes like Wolbachia influence their hosts. I studied Molecular Biology and Genetics in Turkey and then moved to Italy for my Master’s at the University of Pavia. My thesis focuses on the invasive pest Drosophila suzukii, studying its survival, reproduction and management strategies.
-

Carolina Aguzzi
Master Student
I completed my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Pavia, where I have now started the Master’s program in Molecular Biology and Genetics. My main research interest focuses on host–pathogen–vector interactions. I am currently studying the symbiont Wolbachia and its ability to block viral transmission in Aedes species.I completed my Bachelor’s degree at the University of Pavia, where I have now started the Master’s program in Molecular Biology and Genetics. Daniela Mayorga
PhD student - in collaboration with Biocentis srl
I am driven by a deep curiosity for the role insects play in our ecosystems. I began my research at the National University of Colombia, studying how predatory insects respond to entomopathogenic fungi used in pest control. I then moved to Germany, where I completed a Master’s focused on molecular tools for genetic pest control. I am now based in Italy, at Biocentis, working on sustainable and innovative genetic strategies to manage pest insects, guided by the belief that protecting biodiversity begins with understanding — and respecting — the smallest members of our world.
